About Gosling Wildlife Management Area

Gosling Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is situated in Sussex County, Virginia, encompassing a variety of habitats such as managed pine forests, hardwood swamps, impoundments, and open fields. The landscape supports a range of wildlife species including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and numerous amphibians and reptiles. Originally acquired by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to provide quality habitat for game species and promote sustainable outdoor recreation, the area has developed into a valuable resource for hunters, anglers, birdwatchers, and photographers.

The WMA features a system of maintained roads and trails allowing access to different habitats, including several small ponds and wetland areas that attract migratory birds and waterfowl during fall and winter. Hunting is a primary activity here, with designated seasons for deer, small game, and waterfowl. Anglers can enjoy fishing in the area’s impoundments, which are managed to support populations of bass, crappie, and other game fish. In addition to hunting and fishing, the area offers opportunities for hiking, wildlife photography, and nature study with an emphasis on low-impact use.

Although there are no developed campgrounds within Gosling WMA, dispersed camping is allowed under WMA regulations. The area's quiet rural setting and varied ecosystems make it attractive for visitors seeking solitude and natural surroundings. Its proximity to nearby towns such as Sussex, Emporia, and Petersburg provides convenient access for day trips. Visitors are encouraged to prepare for limited facilities and carry appropriate licenses or permits for hunting and fishing activities. Overall, Gosling WMA is a key part of Virginia’s commitment to conservation and wildlife management, balancing public recreational use with habitat preservation.
